Double Chin Reduction (Kybella)

Under-chin fat brings men and women of all ages to Solano Plastic Surgery in search of a proven treatment to correct a double chin. We understand their frustration. Sagging skin and some fat cannot be corrected by diet and exercise. As a result, many people suffer from having a double chin that can make them look older than they are.

Facial plastic surgery has traditionally been the only option to treat excess neck fat and slack jawlines. Unfortunately, the discomfort and extended downtime, as well as the risks of surgery are a deterrent for patients who are unhappy with their double (or even triple) chins.

At our practice, patients have access to the latest weapon in the war on double chins: a cosmetic injectable called Kybella™. Deoxycholic acid is the active ingredient. When it is injected under the jawline directly into hard-to-reach tissue, it eliminates moderate to severe fat.

Our patients couldn’t be happier with the treatment or the results.

Why Patients Choose Solano for Kybella™ Treatments

Kybella™ is a new way to treat double chins without surgery. Because it is so new, it’s especially important that you entrust your care to knowledgeable and licensed providers who are qualified to administer this treatment.

Kybella™ is a medical-grade cosmetic injectable, and the FDA requires that it be administered by “a licensed health care professional.” At our practice, our meticulously trained and highly experienced medical doctors are experts at their work.

In the hands of the wrong person, Kybella™ can cause serious side effects, including nerve injury in the jaw that can cause an uneven smile or facial muscle weakness and trouble swallowing. Therefore, wherever you choose to have your Kybella™ treatments, the medical experts at Solano Plastic Surgery urge you to check the credentials and training of the doctor holding the needle.

Don’t be shy. Ask questions and request proof his/her credentials, including before-and-after pictures of patients.

7 Benefits of Kybella™

Many of the patients visiting our practice complain that a double chin makes them look older than they actually are. Their concern is a common one. About 68% of people surveyed by the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery in 2014 named excess fat under the chin and neck one of their top concerns.

In the hands of the doctors at Solano Plastic Surgery, Kybella™ injections help patients achieve a more chiseled chin. The key patient-pleasing benefits of this treatment are:

  • Non-surgical treatment
  • Clinically proven, safe, and effective
  • Eliminates double chin
  • Dramatic lower facial rejuvenation
  • Gradual, subtle, natural-looking results
  • No downtime
  • More self-confidence

Kybella™ Basics: Why You Have a Double Chin & How to Eliminate It

According to the American Society of Dermatologic Surgery, submental fat – the excess fat that creates double chins – is a common problem for as many as 70% of cosmetic enhancement patients. At Solano Plastic Surgery, it is a concern for people of all shapes and sizes, not all of them overweight, as you might think.

The truth is that while weight definitely contributes to the problem of a double chin, the primary cause could be something you inherited from your family. Genetics has an effect on two key factors that contribute to the formation of a double chin:

  • How your body stores fat
  • How your body retains water

A double chin can also be the unavoidable consequences of the skin loosening and muscle loss that are normal effects of aging. When chin muscles begin to slacken over time, your risk of developing a double chin increases. The situation is worsened when, due to age, your skin loses its tautness and elasticity.

We tell patients at our practice that the factors leading to a double chin are out of their control. Their response is often, “So I just have to live with excess neck fat unless I want surgery?” Fortunately, this is not the case.

Kybella™ is a new non-surgical, cosmetic injectable treatment for submental fullness, also known as a double chin. It is a non-animal, non-human formulation of deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring molecule in the human body that assists in the breakdown and absorption of fat.

Formerly known as ATX-101, Kybella™ has gained popularity with patients and providers since it first came to the market in 2015. It represents the first and only FDA-approved treatment for adults with moderate-to-severe double chins. (To date, it has not been approved for use in any other area of the body.)

Until recently, cosmetic injectables were used exclusively to add volume to the face and/or treat wrinkles. Kybella™, however, is the first-in-class injectable that actually destroys fat cells, effectively shrinking your double chin. Once destroyed, the fat cells are naturally absorbed by the body and never return.

Tiny needles, as many as 50 per treatment, are inserted into the fat deposits under the jawline. Once there, Kybella™ destroys fat cells by creating holes in their outer layer. Once the membrane has been broken, the body naturally metabolizes the fatty contents. As a result, this treatment can re-contour your chin and improve moderate to severe submental fullness.

Treatment entails two to six monthly sessions of roughly 20 minutes each.

Do Kybella™ Treatments Really Work on Double Chins?

Yes! At Solano Plastic Surgery, we believe that patient health and beauty are connected. Each facial rejuvenation treatment we offer, whether surgical or non-surgical, must have a proven track record of success supported by science-based research.

Kybella™ has been cited in over 20 clinical studies with more than 2,600 patients worldwide. Here are some of the results:

  • 79% of patients treated with Kybella™ reported satisfaction with the appearance of their face and chin.
  • 2% of patients experienced improvement with Kybella™ vs 20.5% of patients who responded to placebo.

The emotional benefits of treatment with Kybella™ are also well documented. Patients reported

  • Feeling happier
  • Feeling younger
  • Feeling less embarrassed and self-conscious
  • Feeling that their appearance now matches their weight

Kybella™ vs. Liposuction of the Chin

Excess chin fat has traditionally been removed with liposuction. For some patients, however, the discomfort and downtime associated with a surgical solution has kept them trapped in their double chins. With Kybella™, patients that visit Solano can now treat their double chins in a series of office visits, with very little, if any, downtime.

With Kybella™, treatments are spaced out at least a month apart, and each individual session is well tolerated by patients at our practice. Recovery after each treatment is minimal.

Comparing the cost of Kybella™ to liposuction, Kybella™ may be a more expensive option, depending on the number of sessions required. However, the two treatment methods are generally comparable.

In the eyes of our patients, however, the best thing about Kybella™ vs liposuction for a double chin is that it’s less invasive. Patients at Solano can get rid of excess chin fat without the risks associated with surgery, the side effects of anesthesia, and a prolonged recovery.

It’s important to note that Kybella™ can only be used for removal of fat under the chin. If you have loose skin in this area, Kybella™ can’t address that problem. If you have a double chin and saggy skin, a lower facelift plus liposuction might be a better choice for you.

During your consultation at Solano Plastic Surgery, we’ll review all your options for facial rejuvenation and help you choose a treatment that will help you achieve your aesthetic goals.

How to Prepare for a Kybella™ Treatment

At Solano, we pride ourselves on offering our patients the very latest in aesthetic treatments coupled with world-class customer service. Part of that top-notch service is our practice of tailoring a specific plan of care for each and every one of our patients.

Because Kybella™ is a non-surgical injectable treatment, little preparation is necessary on the part of our patients. We do the heavy lifting to ensure that all goes well.

During the pre-treatment consultation, a member of our team performs a thorough assessment with medical history and lifestyle questions to ensure that a patient is physically and emotionally healthy enough for the treatment.

What to Expect During a Kybella™ Treatment

As a patient at our practice you can expect white glove service at every step of your journey to facial rejuvenation. The moment you call for a consultation, we’ll treat you like the V.I.P. (Very Important Patient) you are. The members of our team will do everything necessary to ensure that all your needs are taken care of and your expectations surpassed.

Need someone to hold your hand, literally or figuratively? We understand. After all, change, even for the better, can be daunting. Whatever you’re feeling, our medical team and support staff are there for you. You’re not just in good hands; you’re in expert hands, devoted to your satisfaction.

Our patients are delighted that this is an in-office, outpatient treatment that requires no hospital stay. On the day of your treatment, you’ll fill out a few final forms, and have some pictures taken for before-and-after comparison.

You will also have a chance to ask any last minute questions.

When injected under the chin, Kybella™ breaks down unwanted fat. Once those fat cells are destroyed, they can no longer continue to accumulate or store fat—they are removed permanently. Administered by our experienced medical doctors, a single in-office Kybella™ treatment session typically takes as little as 15-20 minutes.

Many patients experience visible results with two to four treatments spaced at least one month apart. Up to a total of six Kybella™ treatments may be necessary, depending on the degree of facial rejuvenation required.

Once the desired aesthetic outcome from Kybella™ has been achieved, the need for Kybella™ re-treatment is not expected, as Kybella™ causes the permanent destruction of fat cells. Once destroyed, those cells can no longer store or accumulate fat.

What to Expect After a Kybella™ Treatment

Patients asked to rate the discomfort of this treatment for double chins report a 4/10 pain scale experience within the first few minutes after injection of Kybella™. They also report that the pain level subsides rapidly and that subsequent sessions are less painful than the first.

Common side effects associated with Kybella™ treatments for double chins include:

  • Swelling
  • Bruising
  • Pain
  • Numbness
  • Redness
  • Hardness in the treatment area

To ensure maximum patient comfort, your doctor will discuss whether an ice pack, pain relieving pills, numbing cream, numbing shots, ring blocks, or even tumescent lidocaine injections are advisable to help keep the pain under control.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Kybella™ Treatments?

Solano Plastic Surgery welcomes you for Kybella™ treatments if you enjoy good health, a positive mental attitude, and realistic expectations about the results of a cosmetic treatment. These are the foundation of a successful Kybella™ treatment at Solano Plastic Surgery.

Beyond that, men and women with submental fullness (double chins) that cannot be corrected with diet or exercise are good candidates for Kybella™ treatments. The injections act exclusively on fat cells, making Kybella™ inappropriate for people who have excess fat underneath the chin.

Additionally, this treatment is not recommended for patients who have:

  • An infection in the treatment area
  • Had or plan to have surgery or cosmetic treatments done on the face, neck or chin
  • Medical conditions in or near the neck
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • A history of bleeding problems or are taking an anticoagulant
  • Plan to become pregnant soon

Kybella™ FAQ’s

If you are unhappy with excess fat beneath your jaw, Kybella™ treatments administered by the expert doctors at our practice may be able to give you your happy back. As one of the few providers in the country of this one-of-a-kind therapy, the team at Solano Plastic Surgery is uniquely qualified to help you achieve your aesthetic goals without undergoing surgery.

Kybella™ has only recently been approved by the FDA, so you may not yet be familiar with all of its benefits.

What is Kybella™?

Kybella™ is a cosmetic injectable with the active ingredient of deoxycholic acid. It is the first and only non-surgical, prescription treatment approved by the FDA to be used in adults to improve moderate to severe fat below the chin (submental fat).

What causes a double chin (submental fullness)?

Submental fullness in men and women is caused by aging, genetics or weight gain. Submental fullness is typically resistant to diet and exercise, making it particularly difficult for patients to remedy double chins.

Are there other treatment options for a double chin?

Kybella™ is the only FDA-approved, non-invasive treatment available today to treat submental fullness. Alternatives to Kybella™ are more invasive techniques such as liposuction and surgery.

How does a Kybella™ injection work?

Kybella™’s power comes from deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring substance in the body that assists in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. When Kybella™ is injected into the fat beneath the chin, it pierces cell membranes and destroys fat cells. Once destroyed, these cells can no longer store or accumulate fat, so patients lose their double chin and enjoy a slimmer jawline.

What happens before my treatment?

To ensure that Kybella™ injections are the best solution for your double chin and will provide the best lower facial rejuvenation goals, our experts do a physical exam to determine the extent of your submental fullness. A customized treatment plan will be developed for you, and the anticipated results of your treatment will be reviewed. If you choose to proceed, you can opt to have your first treatment session at that time.

How is Kybella™ administered?

Kybella™ treatments are administered exclusively by the medical doctors at Solano Plastic Surgery. The injections are made into the fat cells under the chin, personalized to the treatment goals of the patient. Each in-office treatment session takes approximately 15-20 minutes.

How many Kybella™ treatments will I need?

During your consultation, the team at Solano Plastic Surgery will develop your treatment plan, which will include the number of sessions required to give you your desired chin profile. Some patients may require as few as two treatments while others may need up to six treatments to achieve full freedom from double chins.

How quickly do the results appear and how long do they last?

Generally, optimal results will be seen within two weeks to two months of treatment. Once destroyed, cells treated with Kybella™ can no longer store or accumulate fat. Therefore, once a patient’s aesthetic goal is achieved, retreatment with Kybella™ is generally not needed.

What are the side effects of Kybella™ injections?

The most common side effects are swelling, bruising, pain, numbness, redness and areas of hardness around the treatment area. When administered by someone who is not a medical doctor or a practitioner without sufficient training and experience, Kybella™ injections can cause more serious side effects, including trouble swallowing and nerve injury in the jaw that can lead to an uneven smile or facial muscle weakness.

Solano Explains When Kybella™ Injections Are Safe, and When They Are Not

Though safe, Kybella™ treatments, like all cosmetic injectables, may cause some patients to experience side effects in the treated areas. The most common side effects include:

  • Swelling
  • Bruising
  • Pain
  • Numbness
  • Redness
  • Areas of hardness

Patient warning: Kybella™ will destroy skin cells as well as fat cells if it is administered incorrectly. If it is mis-injected into the dermis, it can damage the skin, causing it to harden unnaturally.

If you are thinking about Kybella™ treatments for a double chin, be sure that the practitioner you choose is a highly trained and experienced medical doctor. (You won’t find any other kind at Solano Plastic Surgery.)

The Average Cost of Kybella™ Treatments

The cost of each Kybella™ treatment depends on the size of the fatty area beneath the chin that is being treated. Multiple treatment sessions may be required to achieve results equivalent to neck liposuction. All costs are reviewed and confirmed during your initial consultation.
